Reconstructing identity [sound recording] / [workshop sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum].

The workshop explores the history, previous restoration, and identity of a Roman second-century A.D. statue known as Antinous or Dionysos from the collection of the Skulpturensammlung of the State of Art Collections in Dresden, Germany. During the modern history of this statue, its identity and appearance have changed with each new restoration campaign due to advances in archaeology and art history as well as shifting taste and aesthetics. At the time of the workshop, Antinous/Dionysos was undergoing conservation and re-restoration at the Getty Villa. For the workshop, a group of conservators, art historians, and curators assembled to discuss the statue's history, the various approaches to its past restorations (18th-20th centuries), and alternatives for its restoration.
